Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 4 large slices thick-cut garlic bread
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup diced tomatoes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing for about 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  4. While the Sloppy Joe mixture simmers, preheat your oven according to the package instructions for the garlic bread or to 400°F (200°C) if making from scratch.
  5. On a baking sheet, place the slices of garlic bread. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture on top of each slice. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture, and add diced tomatoes if using.
  6. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
  7. Remove the melts from the oven, let them cool slightly, then sprinkle with fresh parsley. Cut in half if desired and serve warm.
