Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

1 cup diced tomatoes (canned or fresh)

2 tablespoons tomato paste

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or turkey). Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

Drain excess fat if using beef, then add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and green bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 4-5 minutes.

Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.

Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Adjust seasoning to taste.

While the filling is simmering, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Slice the hoagie rolls or sandwich buns and lightly toast them in the oven for about 5 minutes.

Once the beef mixture is ready, spoon the mixture generously onto each toasted roll.

Top each sandwich with shredded cheddar cheese and return the sandwiches to the oven for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese melts and is bubbly.

Remove the sandwiches from the oven and sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color. Serve hot.
