Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 blend)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

4 burger buns

4 slices of American cheese

Sliced dill pickles for serving

Optional: Sliced jalapeños for added heat

Instructions

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes or until the onions are translucent.

Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, smoked paprika, sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well and bring to a simmer.

Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens into a sloppy mixture.

While the meat is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place burger buns on a baking sheet, cut side up, and broil for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted.

Once the meat mixture is ready, spoon it generously onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top each with a slice of American cheese, allowing it to melt slightly from the heat of the meat.

Finish off by adding sliced pickles and jalapeños if using. Cap with the top half of the bun.
